Photo Friday – to the Pole with Shackleton

Each Friday I feature someone’s inspiring travel, adventure or expedition photo: Photo Friday.
Hopefully it will get you in the mood for making the most of your weekend.

This week’s photos come from Henry Worsley. Technically Photo Friday should be one photo, but I’m not going to argue with an Army Officer who has trekked to the South Pole, particularly not one from the elite Women’s Auxillary Balloon Corps.

Henry recently led an expedition to the South Pole following in the footsteps of Shackleton’s Nimrod journey. I followed their progress avidly and enviously. The journey took 66 days and covered 920 statute miles. It was 5 years in the making and a resounding success. Henry even carried Shackleton’s Nimrod compass on the journey.

Henry says, “I took many photos but I thought these two might make the Friday Photo shot on your site. One is of the Beardmore glacier and the other is a parhelion that entranced us when we were just 23 miles from the Pole.”

You can learn more about the Shackleton Foundation that Henry’s expedition was supporting here. Thomas Pynchon wrote “Everyone has an Antarctic”. The Foundation exists to support and encourage people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to identify and cross their own Antarctic, particularly where the applicant’s chosen project can be shown to directly benefit the less advantaged.
