Beyond the Pole

The last couple of weeks on this blog have become a bit self-helpy, wishy-washy. So it’s time today to get back to the world of expeditions.
One of the deep frustrations with working in this sphere is the choking algae of novelty projects, celebrities grabbing their 10-minutes of manliness and -true story- people emailing to ask [...]

Here’s to firing the blood and quickening the imagination

I write quite frequently about the “why” of expeditions, particularly in regard to what makes me want to up sticks and begin things. (Examples here, here, here, oh and here too).
But I realised that I do not often talk about the impact that people heading off to challenge themselves can have on others. It is [...]

The stark polar lands grip the hearts of the men

A few words from one of the polar greats about the lure of Antarctica and the “void spaces of the world.”
“Men go out into the void spaces of the world for various reasons. Some are actuated simply by a love of adventure, some have the keen thirst for scientific knowledge, and others again are drawn [...]

Photo Friday – the North Pole in winter

This week’s Photo Friday of polar night, stars and tent comes from an epic expedition, and a truly top class explorer. Borge Ousland and Mike Horn trekked to the North Pole… in winter. Total darkness, extraordinarily cold… Hard core.

Who do you fancy: Fogle or Cracknell?

What was your thinking on this? Were you surprised at the outcome? Have your say in the comments.

Advice for the Antarctic

“Courage alone will not take you far in the Antarctic as we knew it in its old man-hauling days.
The lady gave the bus conductor a penny and said, “how far will it take me?”
“To the door of the Ritz,” was the answer, “but it will not take you far inside.”
Courage or ambition, or love of [...]

Photo Friday – Penguin after a blizzard

Each Friday on this blog I feature someone’s inspiring travel, adventure or expedition photo: Photo Friday.
Hopefully it will get you in the mood for making the most of your weekend.
If you have a Flickr photo that you would like to share please let me know, including the photo’s URL, plus a couple of lines to [...]

A bit of a catch-up on our South Pole plans

It’s been a while since I last wrote about our South Pole plans. Almost a whole year has gone by since Andy, Ben and I postponed SOUTH for a year. During that year the financial world has gone into meltdown. It is difficult to remember a worse time to be seeking corporate sponsorship. It [...]

Reminding myself that expeditions should be fun

I find that sometimes I forget about the fun and excitement of expeditions behind the miasma of corporate sponsorship speak, the gloom of the credit crunch and days, weeks, months behind the computer screen.
So I thought I would add this clip just to remind myself why it will all be worthwhile in the end.

Why go on expeditions?

The most frequent, and most difficult, question asked about expeditions is ‘why’?
Here is Roald Amundsen, who reached the South Pole 97 years ago this week, describing his reaction to reading tales of adventure as a boy,
“They thrilled me as nothing I had ever read before. What appealed to me most was the sufferings that the [...]
