Some advice for the next time you need to travel for business…
I flew to Texas to give a talk at a conference.
Breakfast in London.
Fly to America.
Drive in a random direction away from the airport for a short while.
Find a creek.
Camp for the evening.
I lived like a hobo for a week – washing in creeks, sleeping out of doors. Then I turned up – stinking but happy – at a very swanky 5-star hotel.
I love the way people look at you when you arrive somewhere like that (a bit like the “big mistake” scene in Pretty Woman). (Exactly the same thing happened to me in Hong Kong).
I gave my talk, then flew back to England. The hotel room was very posh, but I’mll never remember it the way I’mll remember that night by the little creek.
Hope you extinguished those 2 logs properly.
Of course! Being by a river is good for that.
I’d love to experience traveling like this. I’m curious, what do you do on those lonely nights in the wild?
I read / think / throw stones into the river…
That sounds nice and peaceful, just what a dad of 3 needs!
Loved this video, wild camping is one of my favourite all time things, next week I’ll be sleeping in the sand dunes of a Norfolk beach, hopefully with a full moon, can’t wait.
One question Alastair, do you have trouble sleeping out in the open? I’m fine in a tent but in a bivvy bag I find it really hard to get a good night’s sleep, my mind is just soooooo active. Any tips?
Cheers and keep up the good work!
I’m the same. I wake up all the time in a bivvy!
Love it. Exactly my kind of traveling.
I absolutely agree that the most memorable nights are those spend in special places and it’s damn hard for any hotel room to compete with a night on a mountain summit watching the sun go down, see the stars twinkle and then see the sun rise again. Although it’s pretty awesome to have a warm bed ready when you return from the outdoors…
