Awesome Al! I am SO looking forward to hearing about this – as an armchair explorer hanging on your coat-tails – or wagon-tails …
I have loved Thesiger for a long time, when ‘A life of my choice’ sat alongside ‘Seven pillars of wisdom’ and Freya Stark on my bookshelf. Can’t wait for the photos/videos/books etc when you return.
(Travel safe!)
The question, Jo, is did 7Pillars just “sit on your bookshelf” (as it does for most people), or did you actually read it..?!
I will be looking forward to this adventure. I have many memories associated with the Empty Quarter. 4 wheeling, hiking, and running my Salukis back then. And of course, I had my share of misadventures too like losing the way and be rescued, losing my dogs to be found later, freezing inside of a tent when I was under-dressed for a night in the March desert, etc.
Fabulous! What an adventure this will be. I absolutely love that desert! Three times I’ve been racing through there on foot and I’d do it another three times. Sand, sand and more sand. So beautiful. Subtle colours. Good luck and I hope it goes well Alastair.
