Here is the gear I will be carrying with me on my hike through Spain. Some of the kit I paid for; some was provided by companies; all of it meets my high standards for serving me well on the road.
Daily Hiking Wear
- Sunhat
- Sunglasses
- Trousers – Haglöfs zip-off ones that turn into shorts.
- Boxers (1 pair: don’t judge me!)
- Shirt – Haglöfs long sleeved. I like trekking in ‘normal’ shirts as you have the versatility to button up or down, roll the sleeves up or down, and stick your collar up to protect from the sun.
- Raincoat – lightweight running one from Haglöfs.
- Socks – 2 pairs, different thicknesses of running sock
- Trainers and Orthotic Insoles – from Profeet. They kindly look after me for free, but even if they did not I would happily go and pay full whack. (So they should probably stop sponsoring me…)
- Rucksack – Osprey Exos 48
- Camera bag – from Osprey
- Camelbak
- Trekking poles – Leki Micro Vario Carbon Strong – light and easy to fold
Evening Camping Gear
- Roll mat – Thermarest Z Rest
- Sleeping Bag – Haglöfs Lim Down +1 (473g)
- Silk liner
- Tarp – Alpkit Rig 3.5
- Buff
- Headtorch
- Suncream – P20 lasts all day, isn’t slimy, and works even on me!
- Base Layer – nice to have something dry, warm and lightweight to wear in the evening (Haglöfs)
- Warm top – I’mm still torn between a down jacket, a down vest, or a fleece. Decision coming soon! (Haglöfs)
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Water bag – Ortlieb do a range all the way up to 10 litres. I always take this as it greatly expands your roaming potential without weighing much.
- Pan – by Alpkit
- Spoon
- Flint – I’mm not taking a stove and will cook exclusively on fires. When this isn’t possible I’mll have to eat cold food.
Spares and Repairs
- Zinc oxide tape (for feet)
- Vaseline (for chafing parts)
- Gaffa tape (for fixing everything)
- Needle/thread (I use dental floss as thread – it’s very strong)
- Multi-tool
- Ibuprofen (the sum total of my first aid. If I was going more into the wilderness I would take more.)
- Compass and maps
- Diary and pen
- Reading book
Electronics
- Solar panel
- European USB plug
- Phone
- Multi charger cable
- Phone battery pack
- Maps on phone – Viewranger and Gaia are both excellent
- Battery pack
- Camera – Sony A7S
- Variable ND filter
- Lens – Sony 24-70mm f4
- Camera Batteries – 5
- Memory Cards – as many as I can beg, borrow or steal. I use 64GB ones.
- Camera mic – Undecided between the Sennheiser MKE400 and the Rode VideoMic.
- Lavalier mic by Sennheiser
- Tripod – Manfrotto Lightweight Travel Tripod
- GoPro cameras x 3
- GoPro tripod / selfie-stick (sorry!)
- GoPro head mount / rucksack clip
- GoPro batteries
- GoPro memory cards
- GoPro charger
- GoPro microphone cable
- Micro SD –> SD converter card
- Phone lav microphone by Rode
- Back-up storage system
Music
- Violin
- Rosin
- Violin strings
- Dry bag for violin
- Music stand
- Laminated music sheets
- Clothes pegs
If you take a fleece instead of a down jacket you can use it as a towel too….then stick it on and it dries quickly. I swear by my Rab micro pull on http://amzn.to/29qaINk Weighs nothing and surprisingly warm for it’s thickness.
Good tip!
Sunhat and straw hat for coin collection >:-)
Ha! I’ll be lucky…
Good luck on your trip. On my Spain hike http://bajada.andrewwelch.info I wore out the base of the hiking poles. Your poles are probably way better quality than the shitty ones I took from sports direct. I found it useful to have alternative footwear (I took a cheap pair of hiking shoes and my vibram 5 fingers and flipflops). Maybe ear plugs are a good idea too – for sleeping and when you start playing 🙂
Thanks, Andy – good advice!
My first challenge would be to put it all in one Rucksack.
Have a nice trip!
I’m curious about how you utilize your tarp? (I didn’t notice trekking poles on your kit list). I’m wondering, if like I do, you just wrap yourself up like a burrito in it and call it good. = )
Have you given up on inflatable mats since your puncture incident? Good luck with the trip. It’s going to be amazing!
Bloody hell Al !!
Cooking over open fires, you,ll be catching rabbits next?!!( Too much time spent chatting to bushcraft gurus i think)
If i smell smoke accompanied by loud screeching while in the Picos…i’ll know you’re not far away.
Sounds like a great expierience….enjoy
one pair of boxers but three go pro cameras. What do you use all the go pros for? Filming 3D?
It’s slightly lazy, but seeing as I owned 3 and they are light I took them so I could have one on a tripod, one on a head mount, and one for anything else I thought of.
