A recent find, which I devoured in two sittings, was the excellent and dreadfully moving Lone Rider – The First British Woman to Motorcycle Around the World by Elspeth Beard, who was a guest on Sarah Williams’ podcast.
She accomplished this in 1982 and it is fascinating and terrifying to contemplate just how big a deal this was pre-internet and pre-smartphone.
I have a very dusty motorbike licence and a very dusty motorbike sitting in the garage which is shouting at me ever louder and I entirely blame Elspeth!

Great article! There are so many women out there doing amazing things, without neccessarily making the headlines so it is nice to give them a bit of recognition. But there are also lots of ladies who are doing awesome things who don’t write about it or talk about it, you just have to look around:) . I could list at least 10 of my friends who do badass things and inspire me all the time 🙂
For sure. I am always aware that we only notice those who shout about themselves a lot. I include myself on that list.
Since I write a blog, I too am on that list! But on the other hand, we can inspire each other to do things by sharing our experiences. Whether it is in our friendship groups over a pint or by writing a blog/books. For example, if you have never written about your epic bike ride, you might not have inspired so many people (including me) to have adventures. So it is not all that bad 🙂
For inspiring women how about Josie Dew, Karen Darke and the great Dervla Murphy. I recently read Dervla’s book 8 feet in the Andes, particularly enjoyable having travelled twice in Peru in the last 18 months.
