In Shackleton’s Footsteps

In Shackleton’s Footsteps is a new book by Henry Worsley. Henry recently led an expedition to the South Pole following in the footsteps of Shackleton’s Nimrod journey. I followed their progress avidly and enviously. The journey took 66 days and covered 920 statute miles. It was 5 years in the making and a resounding success. Henry even carried Shackleton’s compass on the journey.

I was particularly interested in the book as it documents the route that I’mll be slogging along on our South Pole expedition, when we eventually secure a sponsor and get it up and running.

I really recommend this book to anyone interested in Shackleton or polar expeditions. It’s a really good read. If I have one criticism of the book it is that, because I know Henry, I realise how modest he is. He is admirably honest about how hard he finds the expedition, but he doesn’t give much background to make readers aware of how tough Henry and his previous exploits have been. Knowing a little of Henry, as I do, I was regularly struck with the thought of how bloody hard our own journey is going to be!

A book well-worth reading. Buy it here.
