Shouting from my Shed – Volume 1

Hola, as we don’t really say in Yorkshire,

Last year some clever spambots shut down my newsletter, but I’mm back at last. (Thank you, Michael.) For reasons that neither you nor I are probably clever enough to understand, I have been told I should begin by sending a newsletter each week to “rev the system up”, before returning to my usual, less-frenetic, monthly slot.

Worried at the prospect of pestering you for the next four weeks, I tried to think of what I personally like to receive in a newsletter.

And this is what I came up with:

‘¢ A good book to read: I re-read this interesting and poetic book after looking down at the Golden Gate Bridge from a plane, and remembering that the last time I travelled from London to San Francisco it took me 2.5 years to get there, by bicycle. Skyfaring articulates something that often amazes me: how we take for granted the compressed size of our planet. You can go to bed on the opposite side of the planet to where you woke up. That is extraordinary! Travel, perspective, and eloquence.

‘¢ A new adventure to keep an eye on: The Essequibo River flows through virgin rainforest in Guyana. It is South America’s third longest river and three intrepid women are going to try to be the first to descend it from source to sea. They will be blogging about their adventure.

‘¢ A lovely Instagram to follow: I adore Chris’ mountain photography. (Chris’ or Chris’s?? Both look wrong to me…) I’mm trying my best to persuade him to come do a trip with me. So far he is refusing!

‘¢ A superb adventure film to watch: I love it when people do daft, beautiful stuff just for the sheer daft, beautiful exuberance of it. Four skaters head north to the cold Norwegian coast, applying their urban skills to a wild canvas of beach flotsam, frozen sand, and pastel skies.

‘¢ An intriguing article to ponder: How You Climb A Mountain Is More Important Than Reaching The Top. Any article that combines Yvon Chouinard and Viktor Frankl is alright by me.

‘¢ An even better newsletter than mine to subscribe to: I used to enjoy the Hiut newsletter because it was niche and unknown but still really good. Now that Meghan Markle has taken time out from leading Germany to slip into a pair of Wales’ finest jeans, they’ve rather hit the big time. But every week this newsletter offers me something interesting and thought-provoking to read.

‘¢ Deep and meaningful wisdom to ponder: ‘œI like to imagine the guy who invented the umbrella was going to call it the ‘˜brella’. But he hesitated.’ – Andy Field

‘¢ A You’ve Been Framed “fail” to amuse you: My dream newsletter would probably be a daily dose of this stuff. Absolutely my guilty pleasure! OK, I know I am immature for laughing. I know this really, really, really hurt the poor kid. But the combo of the music, the slow-mo, and -I’mm sorry- the blooming agony just makes me laugh every time (and puts today’s minor problems into perspective). Sorry.
