The most frequent, and most difficult, question asked about expeditions is ‘why’?
Here is Roald Amundsen, who reached the South Pole 97 years ago this week, describing his reaction to reading tales of adventure as a boy,
“They thrilled me as nothing I had ever read before. What appealed to me most was the sufferings that the men had to endure. A strange ambition burned within me, to endure the same privations… I decided to be an explorer.”
The Encouragement page of this site makes more efforts to answer ‘why‘?
