Today I’m launching a new venture, my first podcast. I hope that you enjoy it.
It’s critical for the success of a podcast that it gets off to a good start. You can really help me in under 30 seconds by:
- If you use an iPhone, click here then press Subscribe. It doesn’t cost a penny. I’d love you to do this even if you have no intention of listening to me!
- If you use another sort of phone, click here then press Subscribe. It doesn’t cost a penny. I’d love you to do this even if you have no intention of listening to me!
- If you use Spotify, click here then press Follow.
- Post something on social media such as “Living Adventurously looks like an intriguing new podcast. It launches today. Listen to it here: alastairhumphreys.com/podcast“
If you can spare another 30 seconds then writing a couple of sentences as a review here would be massively helpful. Basically if Apple notice a podcast in its early days it gets boosted round to loads of new listeners. Subscribes and reviews are key to this. Scroll down to the bottom for some of the reviews the podcast has received.
Now that I’ve got the begging out of the way, I guess I should explain what the podcast is all about!
Back in my youth, my glory days, I spent 4 years cycling around the world. Ever since then I’ve been interested in the idea of Living Adventurously. But the definition of Living Adventurously differs for everyone. And it also changes over time, as our lives and circumstances change.
So I decided to get back on my bike and spend a month asking different people what living adventurously means to them….

The Story
I spent a glorious summer month cycling around Yorkshire, the county where I grew up.
Reviews
- I listen when I am commuting or running. I like hearing people’s perspectives on adventures. It gives me ideas for things I might want to try or places I might want to go.
- I enjoy hearing how other people interpret ‘living adventurously’ and apply it to their lives in an achievable way for inspiration as we can’t all head off to climb Everest or go on a 6 month trek across Africa.
- I like the simplicity of it. Just nice people doing nice things. It makes me think I can do them, too.
- I listen because I’m always looking for different ways to how I can live my life more adventurously. Fascinating hearing other people describe what adventure means to them. Keep doing what you’re doing 🙂
- noseyness – a little furtive glimpse into someone else’s life.
I like the fact that there is no discernable link between the guests.
But, shouldn’t you be asking people who don’t listen to it? Otherwise you’ll just get confirmation bias? - Because it’s fun to listen to! It tells me there is not 1 way to live an adventurous life and that it means different things for different people.
- I also like hearing the answers to the card-questions because they make me think hard about my own answers.
- It’s lovely to hear different people doing wonderfully extraordinary things in a delightfully ordinary manner, there’s a simplicity to it and makes me feel closer to nature and adventure! Adventure is what you make it!
- I’ve enjoyed the approach as you dig for more information on the emotional attachment to their experiences and plans also.
- I love how unpolished it is. It’s like you are listening into a conversation which is open, real and honest right down to the pauses, interruptions and the emotions. The fact some of them have never heard of a podcast is even better. I also like how it makes me think how I would answer the questions from the deck of cards.
- Searching but also life affirming.
- you don’t need to be a “professional” adventurer or have a huge following on social media to live adventurously in your own way.
- I like to hear how other people have been fitting adventures in around the 9-5, and or family life.
- I find there is something to reflect on and learn from in every story.
- It is very often in line with my core values (diversity, creativity, generosity) and illuminates opportunities to exercise them in novel ways.
- They’re the sort of questions/ conversations I love to have with others but don’t always get the opportunity so your podcast offers a way of being a fly on the wall
- It’s relatable and life affirming. Be interesting to do similar interviews with people living in big cities to see how they live more adventurously day to day.
- Every day folk sharing their stories makes me feel as if adventure is completely within my grasp. That you don’t have to dedicate your life training for some big expedition, you can find it in the simplest of things. I also feel a sense of community and comfort from like-minded people, that nature and the outdoors is where you find true meaning and happiness
- I listened to your podcast to try and get an understanding of how people have that sense of joy and adventure in their lives.
- I listen for enjoyment and escapism from the humdrum of life with small children. It also serves as a source of ideas and inspiration. I often share these stories.
- Every episode manages to surprise me and inspire me in ways I never expected
- It reminds me to keep seeking adventure in my everyday life and to not “give in” to routine. It is refreshing to see how many seemingly ordinary people live such adventurous lifes.
Just burned through all of your current podcasts. Can’t wait for more.
