A Message about a Microadventure

Emails like this are wonderful to receive. After my year of microadventures I have been delighted to see a real increase in the number I receive.

I’mm posting this here to emphasise this point: that you do not have to be a full-time adventurer (bum) to go on microadventures, to paddle rivers and sleep on hills. Anyone can do it. You just need to break out of your normal routine and go and do it!

Spring is here: wait for a few days of nice weather and give something like this a go. You won’t regret it. (Unless it rains!)

I have been reading your blog for a year or so and regularly look forward to your next post.

I have always led a fairly active lifestyle and have never been particularly unfit, but my working week has always felt unbalanced.  ‘Work’ was dominating whilst the fun stuff featured at the lower end of the priority list.

Having read each of your microadventures with interest I started building smaller adventures in to my working week.  Initially I walked the 10km to work and then started cycling it once a week, then twice, then every day. This slowly evolved to leading a more active lifestyle.

Having caught the microadventure bug I decided it was my turn.  Wednesday after work I jumped on my bike with my packraft and hammock and cycled the 10km to the river in the city where I live.  With the raft inflated and bike firmly secured I paddled 4km feeling at peace with the ducks, the jumping fish and the setting sun.  As the sun dipped behind the mountains I left the river to continue its course, packing my boat and jumping back on my bike.  As the light faded I parked my bike at the foot of a local mountain and in the dark hiked to the summit. With panoramic views over the city I pitched my hammock and reclined to enjoy the solitude and perhaps more importantly my pesto pasta. My appetite sated, I hit the hay to be woken by the bird call and the dawn of a new day. I packed camp and headed home for a quick shower before going back to work.

It was a liberating experience.  I smiled when I left work. I was smiling when floating, when cycling and when hiking.  I smiled as I drifted off to sleep and I smiled throughout the next working day smug in the knowledge that I had shown my normal working week two fingers and had the week on my terms.  My friends think I’mm mad, I just like being a little different.
