I’mve just received this email from white water kayaking adventurer Chris Eastabrook and I’mm pretty jealous!
Hey Alastair, how’s things?
Thanks again for inviting me to speak at Night of Adventure in London last March, it was a cracking night.
I eluded in that presentation that my next big expedition was to Papua Indonesia. After months of hard work, I’mm happy to say that the trip is a goer!
Myself and two others are travelling to the west coast of Papua. We are then chartering a single prop plane to transport us and our kayaks deep into the rainforest. From here we are trekking for a couple of days and setting up a tiny base camp on the banks of the Derewo River.
The Derewo flows off the highest mountain in Australasia, Puncak Jaya, for 300km until it reaches the sea. It passes through limestone gorges and over narrow rapids making it a long and formidable challenge.I’mm pretty excited about the trip, we have some good backing behind us, but also terrified of what we might find. Since I started planning this trip I’mve heard stories of cannibals, men getting lost in the jungle for 3 days just going to the loo, crocodiles and tribal warfare.
No one has ever paddled the river before, we are travelling in between tribal zones in untouched rainforest so it should be interesting either way!We are putting the final preparations together as we are off in 2 weeks time, I need to find a good retailer of Lycra underwear, and I’mll let you know how we get on, on our return.
Cheers
Chris
