Making a living from travelling

I asked Darren Alff if he would be so kind as to share some wisdom on how people can make a living from doing what they love. Here’s what he had to say.

Travel costs money… and depending on where you plan to go in the world, it may cost a lot of money! But traveling the world no longer means months and/or years of saving up only to head out into the wild and return home with mere pennies in your bank account.

Due to dramatic increases in technology over the past several years, it is now possible to live and work almost anywhere in the world, make money while you are traveling, and come home from your adventures with more funds in your bank account than when you first set out.

It really can happen… and I should know! Just weeks ago I returned from a 9-month bicycle tour through Central and Eastern Europe and came home with nearly 70% more money in my bank account than when I first left home!

How exactly did I do this? And how you can you do the same?

1 )Don’t Commit To A Job That Ties You Down – No Matter What The Pay

Some of biggest obstacles holding people back from doing the things they want in life are their current commitments. Whether it is their job, house, spouse, kids, bills, or other belongings, many people let their current commitments prevent them from going after the things they really want in life.

None of these commitments are bad, if that is what you want, but if your goal is to travel the world you probably aren’t going to be able to do that if you work at a job that requires you to show up at an office five or more days each week.

The key here is to never commit to a job that has the potential of tying you down to a single locale, because as soon as you make the commitment to work in a single place, your chances of ever being free enough to travel the world become incredibly slim. Find a job that works around the life you want to live – no matter what the pay! Your time and freedom are worth far more than the money you can make in a job you dislike.

2) Figure Out A Way To Do Your Work Over The Internet. Hire Someone To Do Everything Else.

After you’ve found a job that caters to your ideal lifestyle, you need to start working out how you can perform that job from anywhere in the world. With just a few technological gadgets in your possession, this becomes incredibly easy.

With a laptop, an Internet connection, a VoIP service (such as Skype) and a digital camera, you have all the tools you need to take your office on the road. With these tools you can send and receive emails, faxes, phone calls and more! You can even conduct meetings, manage sub-contractors, and pay your bills – no matter where you are on the planet.

With these tools in mind, reverse engineer your job and find a way to conduct your role from anywhere in the world. Look at the tasks you do now on a daily basis and imagine doing those same tasks while traveling Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, or anywhere in the world.

For the jobs you can’t perform via the Internet, over the phone or through the Post, hire someone to do the work for you. It may cost a little to pay that person to do your work, but it will free you up to do the things you are truly passionate about – and it will give you the time you need to create sources of passive income.

Which brings up my third and final tip for making money while you travel. And that is…

3) Create Multiple Sources Of Passive Income

What is passive (or residual) income?

Passive income is money that you make for work you’ve done in the past. It is money you make while you are not directly working. At a normal job you only get paid if you show up and do your job (Your time = money). But with passive income you get paid for the work you’ve done previously, so you actually make money while you are sleeping, riding your bicycle, climbing a mountain, or anything else.

A good example of someone who makes passive income is an author of a successful book. The author writes the book once, which takes a huge amount of work upfront. But once the book comes out, it can be sold time and time again (at very little cost)… and the author of that book will continue to make money for as long as he or she lives, as long as the book keeps selling. And that’s the power of passive income! You do the work once and collect the profits in the future.

The key here is to start looking for ways to make passive income from your hobbies and/or the work you are currently doing. If you can build up enough passive income streams, you may not ever have to work a job you dislike ever again… and you’ll have the freedom you need to travel the world, do just about anything you please, and truly pursue your life’s passions.

Darren Alff has been traveling by bike since 2001 and has just recently returned from a 9-month tour of Europe.
