Shouting from the Shed 19

Hello!

Summer’s over, September’s here, I’m bloomin’ busy, conkers are coming, and it’s a fine month to ride your bike.

So this newsletter will be terse and functional (but still brilliant-ish).

Oh, and if you can’t be bothered to read this newsletter, despite the hours of sweat and toil I put into it for you, please at least skip to the bottom and watch the 1-minute film about my Ultimate Triathlon.

Let’s get on with it…

Super U.S Run 🇺🇸

Jamie McDonald is running 6,000 miles across America, dressed as a Superhero. He runs a marathon most days, without a support crew, and is raising money for sick kids around the world. The adventuring world needs more people like Jamie. The WORLD needs more people like Jamie!

Into The Empty Quarter

One of my favourite ever adventures, and definitely the best film I have ever made: the full-length version of Into the Empty Quarter is now available to rent.

Be prepared for two idiots, a terrible cart, beautiful desert, and kind strangers giving us ice cream in the desert…

Say “Yes, and…”

SAY “YES, AND…”: Some friends see problems everywhere. They won’t commit to plans. They see barriers and inconveniences. You know who they are. They say, “yes, but…”

Some friends are spontaneous. They see themselves a year down the line and think, “Remember when I nipped out for pizza under that oak tree?! What a fun night that was.”

That memory is worth overcoming the immediate minor hassle and inconvenience. So they say, “yes, and…”

This morning I texted a friend I rarely see. “We’ll be hiking vaguely through your neck of the woods tonight. Fancy joining us for a bivvy? I’ll send a grid reference. You bring pizza?”

His reply from the office was swift.

“Yes! And I’ll bring beer…”

New Book Recommendations

As you’ll know, I often share books that have had a big impact on my life. I have decided now to also start sharing newly published books. They may not become classics (and that is not an insult: 99% of books never do – all of mine certainly included), but they are current and will be of interest to some of my audience. It is also a chance for me to help new authors get a bit of publicity.

If you have published a travel or adventure book in the past year, feel free to get in touch about sending me a paper copy. I will share some of them in this newsletter.

First up:

Highways & Backstreets – a beautiful hardback book about cycling solo across America.

The Ultimate Triathlon

I generally do not like to boast, and do my best to make adventure and endeavour available to everyone. However, there are times when you simply have to acknowledge that there are only a few of us who are elite enough to tackle the ultimate triathlon…
