Very sad news

Some terrible news. Rob Gauntlett was killed this week, along with a friend, in a climbing accident in the Alps. Rob was 21.

In 2006, aged 19, Rob climbed Mount Everest. Last year he completed a huge expedition covering more than 26,000 miles using only skis, dogsleds, sails and bicycles. In November Rob, and his friend James, received National Geographic’s, “Adventurer of the Year Award”.

I met Rob and James in a pub just before Christmas to chat about their next plans. Rob was ambitious, positive and energetic about his future. As well as being successful, he was also a really nice, decent guy. He had the balance right. The world was all before him. Rob will be sadly missed, by the adventuring and climbing world, and by all his many friends and family.

  1. Alastair..
I traveled with Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper on their “Pole to Pole” expedition. It was such a shock to find out what happend. I meet his brother Tim and mom, and I just can’t believe he is gone, they must be devastated… he died doing what he loved the most and inspired millions with his achievements… He gave me the proper motivation to set on my expeditions with my friend who is blind, and in matter of months we set 5 records… all this records with him on mind…. Gracias Rob… nos vemos pronto!!!
